Dunn's Pond Pack Algae Control

Algae is a common problem with most pond or lake managers. Sunlight, high nutrients and low oxygen levels all contribute to algae problems. The best time to prepare yourself and your pond is early spring. Dunn's Fish Farm has put together these proven products to give you the edge. Spend less time treating your pond and more time fishing.

Dunn's Pond Pack Algae Control consists of:

  • Cutrine Plus Liquid(1 gallon)
  • Cutrine Plus Granular (12lb Container - 1lb every 720 Square Feet)
  • Biocycle Algastat(1 gallon)
  • Aquashade(1 gallon)

These products have proven successful against many types of Algae including filamentous and hair algae.

This combination of products will generally treat 1/2 to 1 acre depending on pond depth.

How & When to use these products..

  1. Aquashade should be used first in this process, early spring is best. Aquashade is a blend of blue and yellow dyes specifically designed to screen or shade portions of the sunlight spectrum (red-orange and blue-violet) required by underwater aquatic plant and algae growth.
  2. Biocycle Algastat is a two phase water conditioner with barley extract. Biocycle is best used when water temperatures begin to rise in early spring. Nonmetallic pigment base, screens out specific sun rays interrupting photosynthesis. Live reproducing microbes out compete algae for available nutrients in the water. Used in a structured maintenance program algal blooms are minimized and less frequent during warm months.
  3. Cutrine Plus Granular is used to kill algae on the bottom of the pond. As you see algae forming in the shallows use 1lbs per 720 square feet using a handheld spreader. Most algae will start on the bottom and eventually float to the top. This will kill algae before it is present on the surface.
  4. Cutrine Plus Liquid is used when algae is present on top of the water. Aquashade & Biocycle when used properly will limit algae growth so you will treat less. This product is mixed 9 to 1 with water and sprayed directly on the top water algae.

These fish will not feed on a commercial feed, but with a good supply of Fathead Minnows and Hybrid Bluegill they will grow at a rate of 1/4 to 1/2 pound per growing season.

There are two types of crappie that are most common, the Black Crappie and the White Crappie. The Whites are much more prolific than the Black. White Crappie in most cases, take over smaller ponds and lakes. White Crappie should never be stocked in impoundments less than 100 acres. Black Crappie can be stocked in ponds as small as 1 acre without any concern of overpopulation. Since they don't propagate to the extent that the White Crappie do, you will find the average Black Crappie will grow faster and get larger than the average White Crappie.

The Black Crappie is a fish that offers an excellent sporting quality, and are even more enjoyable on the table than they are in the pond. A large Black Crappie is by far the most attractive sport fish you can have in your pond. When properly managed, this fish will add color to your pond or lake not found in most waters.

METHOD OF APPLICATION: A dry fertilizer spreader may be used to ensure even distribution on large areas. When treating small dockside or swimming areas (1/5 of an acre or less), broadcast CUTRINE-PLUS GRANULAR in the same fashion used in spreading grass seed. Spot treatment of problem areas is easily accomplished as CUTRINE-PLUS granules are readily visible through the water, permitting pinpointing of treatment on target algae.

APPLICATION RATE: CUTRINE-PLUS- is applied at a rate of 0.6 gallon per acre-foot (43,560 cubic feet) of water to be treated for planktonic and filamentous algae, 1.2 gallons per acre-foot for Chara and Nitella and 1.2 to 3.0 gallons per acre-foot for Hydrilla.

METHOD OF APPLICATION: CUTRINE-PLUS should be diluted with at least 9 parts of water to facilitate even distribution during application. Surface spray is most practical for treatment of planktonic and filamentous algae. Bottom-growing algae should be treated by underwater injection or by application of CUTRINE-PLUS GRANULAR. Hydrilla can be treated by surface spray or underwater injection.

Turtles are a major problem in any pond or lake. Besides being a nuisance to fisherman, they can forage on your fish and may destroy spawning areas, disrupting the natural balance of your lake. For this reason, Dunn's "Sure Ketch" Turtle Trap has become one of the more popular items in our product line.

This trap is constructed of an aluminum angle main frame and is held afloat with a high density Styrofoam on all four sides. There are two aluminum flippers with grooves that come out of the water and go over the top of the trap on both sides. These flippers are attached to stainless hinges. When the turtles crawl up on the flippers to sun themselves, the flippers will dump them into the trap. The flippers are weighted to automatically reset themselves.

The Fathead Minnow is a plankton feeder, but it will also feed very actively on mosquito larva and on commercial feed. These fish will not get over 3 inches long, so unlike many types of minnows, the Fathead will never turn into a predator. They have a life span of 14 months and will reproduce a minimum of 3 to 4 times before the end of their life cycle. They are very high in protein, insuring a high conversion rate, and they are slow top-water swimmers, so all your sport fish will benefit. When it comes to vegetation control in your pond, grass carp are a cost effective, efficient solution to many types of problem vegetations. To achieve desired results these fish should be stocked at a rate of 10 per acre of vegetation, or increase this rate by 50% in spring fed or otherwise clear water impoundments where sun rays penetrate much deeper than normal. These fish are available on our route trucks or for special delivery.

The Grass Carp will not reproduce, or harm the reproduction of other fish in the pond. They eat 3 times their body weight in moss and vegetation per day. The vegetation is sucked through the mouth to the "teeth" in the throat, this way the pond is not muddied by pulling the moss out by the roots. The rooted vegetation will continue to grow back while the Grass Carp keep it maintained. Their average growth rate is 2-5 pounds per season. These fish will need to be re-stocked every 5 to 7 years on the average.

Dunn's Pond Pack (Submerged Weed Control)

Submerged Vegetation is common and can be a problem with most pond or lake managers. Some vegetation is native to an area although birds can bring unwanted vegetation from other regions. The best time to treat is spring when water temperatures begin to rise. Keep in mind when treating vegetation, oxygen levels can drop. Aeration will be important during this time. Spend less time treating your pond and more time fishing and enjoying your pond.

Dunn's Pond Pack Submerged Weed Control consists of:

  • Sonar Q (8lb Pail)
  • Biocycle Algastat(1 gallon)
  • Aquashade(1 gallon)

This combination of products will generally treat 1/2 to 1 acre depending on pond depth.

How & When to use these products..

  1. Aquashade should be used first in this process, early spring is best. Aquashade is a blend of blue and yellow dyes specifically designed to screen or shade portions of the sunlight spectrum (red-orange and blue-violet) required by underwater aquatic plant and algae growth.
  2. Biocycle Algastat is a two phase water conditioner with barley extract. Biocycle is best used when water temperatures begin to rise in early spring. As the Sonar Q is working and killing exising vegetation, nutrient levels rise which can bring on an algae bloom. Nonmetallic pigment base, screens out specific sun rays interrupting photosynthesis. Live reproducing microbes out compete algae for available nutrients in the water. Used in a structured maintenance program algal blooms are minimized and less frequent during warm months.
  3. Sonar Q The Sonar Q pellet begins the degradation process immediately upon contact with the water. Once submerged the Sonar Quick Release pellet swells and expands, transforming the pellet into a buoyant composition that will rest on top of soft muck bottom sediments. Sonar Q has the efficient concentration level of a liquid, but provides for more accurate placement. The pellets will land where they are thrown, eliminating overspray onto sensitive shoreline vegetation like lawns.
